Turkey, Russia agree to build mechanism on Syria

If a traditionally friendly country such as Ukraine has distanced itself from Russian Federation, the risk is that Turkey might now draw close, if only to raise the stakes in negotiations with the European Union and US.

Erdogan also thanked his Russian counterpart for a telephone call after the failed coup attempt on July 15, saying it "brought our people great happiness".

Erdogan's visit to Putin's hometown of St. Petersburg yesterday was also his first foreign trip since a failed coup attempt last month that sparked a purge of alleged coup supporters in the military, judiciary, civil service and education sector, and cast a shadow over Turkey's relations with the West.

"This visit seems to me a new milestone in bilateral relations, beginning with a clean slate, and I personally, with all my heart and on behalf of the Turkish nation salute Mr Putin and all Russians", Erdogan said in an interview with Russian state media on Tuesday.

Following the incident, Russian Federation gives trading sanctions along with travel suspensions to Turkey.

The Turkish leader also called for the TurkStream gas pipeline, a joint project with Russian Federation, to be "done as soon as possible".

President Erdogan travels to Russia to meet with President Putin for the first time since apologising in late June for the downing of a Russian fighter jet along the Syrian border in November previous year.

They were also expected to discuss Syria, a conflict where the two countries find themselves on opposing sides, with Moscow backing President Bashar al-Assad and Ankara wanting him out of power. At the same time, North Atlantic Treaty Organisation relations with Russia have been strained over Russian military incursions in Ukraine, including its annexation of Crimea, and aggressive behavior on the alliance's eastern flank.

Said Erdogan, as reported by BBC.

But after such a bitter dispute - which saw Putin accuse Erdogan of stabbing profiting from an illegal oil trade with the Islamic State group - it will take a lot for the pair to reheat relations.

Putin said Tuesday that charter flights to Turkey could resume "in the near future", but added that "painstaking work is ahead to revive trade and economic cooperation".

Russian Federation is carrying out a bombing campaign in support of President Bashar Assad while Turkey is fiercely opposed to the Syrian leader.
