Tory peer Lord Keen condemns 'ill-informed' press attacks on judiciary

She told BBC Radio 5 live that other abuse included people telling her "I'm not even human, I'm a primate, I belong in a kitchen - that's the nicest of some of them".

In a statement released yesterday, Truss said: "The independence of the judiciary is the foundation upon which our rule of law is built and our judiciary is rightly respected the world over for its independence and impartiality".

Lord Judge, however, said that Liz Truss as the Lord Chancellor had a "statutory obligation" to defend the judiciary, which he said she had done "a little too late and not a lot".

Britain's government defended the independence of the country's judiciary on Saturday after three judges came under a wave of criticism from newspapers and a senior official for dealing a blow to the government's Brexit preparations.

"A strong independent judiciary is essential to a functioning democracy and to upholding the rule of law", the council said.

The High Court judges who ruled that Article 50 must go before parliament have been slammed in the media.

He added that he found much of the reasoning and conclusion of the three men - including Lord Chief Justice Lord Thomas - "persuasive".

"As much as I hope the Supreme Court will reverse the High Court's decision on the Article 50 case, I utterly condemn the failure of the prime minister and the justice secretary to condemn, forcefully and immediately, press criticism of the judges (such as the Daily Mail headline "Enemies of the People")".

"Sensationalist and ill-informed attacks can undermine public confidence in the judiciary".

Meanwhile, Tory MPs are calling on Mrs May to take action to calm the backlash sparked by the High Court ruling on the process for leaving the EU.

Ukip leader Nigel Farage is reported to be planning to lead a march of tens of thousands of people to the court, which is across Parliament Square from the Palace of Westminster.

"The right of the press to speak freely must be exercised responsibly; it is not a licence to attack judges in a personal manner or seek to undermine the constitutional principle of judicial independence, which is absolute". It won't be but that's what will be conveyed.

Theresa May has insisted the Government remains on course to fire the Brexit starting gun by the end of March next year despite the legal setback.

Theresa May has insisted the Government has a "strong" case to persuade Supreme Court judges to overturn the legal ruling forcing her to gain approval from Parliament to launch European Union withdrawal talks.

Truss had been criticised for staying silent over the backlash against Thursday's landmark judgment that the government can not start the process of leaving the European Union without parliament's approval.

Phillips said: "Some will label me a quitter or, no doubt, worse".

It quoted an unnamed government member as saying: "The problem we have got is we have a Brexit majority in the country and a Remain majority in parliament. We'll be putting those arguments to the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court will make its judgment".

Lord Judge told BBC2's Newsnight that Farage's call for a demonstration outside the Supreme Court risked further undermining the judicial process.
