Secretary of State Rex Tillerson says the USA position on Syria hasn't changed after American warships launched a military strike on an air base in Syria Thursday in response to a deadly chemical weapons attack that killed at least 70 civilians earlier in the week.
The former ExxonMobil chief executive noted that holding such talks would require the participation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime along with its allies.
But Tillerson, who is expected to visit Moscow on Wednesday for talks with Russian officials, said on ABC's "This Week" program there was "no change" to the US military posture toward Syria.
The statement also criticized "the hasty interventions" that followed the chemical attack, in an apparent reference to the USA strikes.
Asked if he and President Trump would "organize an global coalition" to remove Assad, Tillerson responded, "Those steps are under way".
Reacting to the comment, an aide to Mr Johnson said: "It is a shame the Lib Dems would rather snipe and be silly when the United States and United Kingdom are trying to work on a plan to help the innocent people of Syria and stop a devastating civil war".
A US -led coalition has been bombing Islamic State-held territory across Syria, launching 24 strikes on Thursday alone, according to the USA military's Central Command. Meanwhile, Tillerson suggested that the airstrikes hadn't really changed priorities toward ousting Assad.
McMaster also made clear that Trump wants a world-wide response to Assad's action that would include Russian Federation and Iran.
Do you think that further conflict with Syria could bring about World War 3 and do you think President Trump would ever reinstate the draft?
"It is required", he said.
"GOP presidential front-runner and billionaire entrepreneur Donald Trump on Thursday unveiled his plan to 'make the military great again, ' saying he intends to reinstate the draft as part of a larger effort to bolster America's armed forces".
You can all breathe a sigh of relief as Business2Community has reported that this story from the satirical website Real News Right Now has proven to be false and President Trump has not really said that he would reinstate the military draft. Tanden tweeted Friday in response to Gabbard's comments on CNN that she is "skeptical" Assad is responsible for the chemical attack. "And if there is going to be use of force in a continuing basis, he needs the authorization of Congress".
In January, Mr Johnson said Assad should be allowed to run for election to remain in power in Syria and warned that Britain may have to "think afresh" about how to handle the crisis after failing to live up to its mantra that the dictator must go.
The cancellation "once again confirms doubts about the added value of dialogue with the British, who do not have their own position on the majority of current issues", the foreign ministry said in a statement on Sunday.
