Andy Murray admits Queens defeat a 'big blow' for Wimbledon hopes

Andy Murray will donate his winnings from this week's Queen's Club Championships to the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire.

Thompson had been beaten here in qualifying but was offered a reprieve when Aljaz Bedene pulled out with a wrist injury and took full advantage against the home favourite.

Thompson will go through to face American Sam Querrey in round two.

Defeat in his first outing on grass will cause a re-think in Murray's pre-Wimbledon preparations and he is likely to play in an exhibition event at Hurlingham next week to add to the work he will put in on the practice courts between now and July 3.

"I signed in for the lucky loser spot and there weren't too many matches yesterday, but I hung around".

"It's a big blow, for sure", Murray said.

Murray beat Bedene in the second round at Queen's past year and if he wins again he will face either 2010 Queen's champion Sam Querrey or another Briton - wild card Cameron Norrie - in the last 16.

The two-time Wimbledon champion is now gearing up to defend his title at Queen's Club, with his opening match taking place today against Aljaž Bedene. Obviously it has been a tough few months, no question, but when I'm playing I'm just trying to concentrate on my tennis.

Murray's exit completed an exodus of the leading men at the event with second seed Stanislas Wawrinka losing 7-6 7-5 to Spaniard Feliciano López in the first round after Milos Raonic, the third seed, was stunned by Australian 21-year-old Thanasi Kokkinakis 7-6 7-6.

Murray, a record five-time Queen's champion has now lost nine times in 2017, having been sidelined by an elbow injury, and six times to an opponent ranked outside the top 20.

2014 runner-up Lopez hit 18 ace shots, won 83 percent of his first serve points and saved Wawrinka's two break chances in an hour and a half of action.

"Most of the players are travelling with physios now, spending a lot more time working in the gym to protect their bodies from the kind of pounding you give it on the court as well", he said. He and Murray have never previously met.

The defending champion managed to fend him off and there was nothing to split them until a first-set tie-break, in which the world number one appeared to be lacking confidence as he surrendered a 3-1 advantage.
