Speaker Ryan visits wounded lawmaker at hospital

United States congressman Steve Scalise has shown improvement over the last 36 hours after being shot by a gunman who opened fire on Republican lawmakers at a baseball practice earlier in the week.

The annual charity congressional baseball game, which pits the Democrats and Republicans and raises hundreds of thousands of dollars for charitable causes, became a source of support and well wishes to House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA).

Sava says infection remains a risk, after doctors performed several surgeries to stop bleeding and begin repairing abdominal and bone damage.

Scalise underwent a third surgery Thursday and was still in critical condition in the morning at a local Washington, D.C., hospital.

Sava said Scalise has been sedated throughout his hospital stay but his sedation had been "turned down" enough to see him respond to his family's presence. After Scalise was shot in the hip, the bullet traveled through his pelvis, fractured bones and injured internal organs.

Even with the progress over the last two days, though, Sava said Scalise will remain in the hospital for the near future.

Scalise, the No. 3 House Republican, arrived at the hospital via helicopter in shock, with intense internal bleeding and "an imminent risk of death", Sava said.

The FBI and Alexandria Police Department said in a joint statement Thursday that federal authorities had examined the rifle and handgun recovered from the scene and determined that Hodgkinson had bought them from licensed sellers.

A sign in the crowd proclaimed "ONE FAMILY" and the announcer's mention of Scalise, the House majority whip who was critically wounded in the attack Wednesday, brought the masses to their feet. Hodgkinson sprayed rifle fire at Republican congressmen on Wednesday as they practiced for a charity baseball game.

Scalise was shot in the hip while practicing for the Congressional baseball game on Wednesday morning.

Scalise's security detail and other police officers shot and killed the assailant, James Hodgkinson of IL, who had lashed out against President Donald Trump and other Republicans over social media.

The game at Nationals Park carried on a century-old bipartisan ritual, this one tinged with worry about Louisiana Rep. Steve Scalise and the players' determination to answer the attack by coming together in sport. Congressional aide Zack Barth, Tysons Food lobbyist Matt Mika and Capitol Police Officer David Bailey were also shot in the attack, but have since been released from the hospital.

"As well as President Trump, Vice President Pence and all of Steve's colleagues who have reached out during this challenging time".

Trump says, "Steve is our friend, he's a patriot and he's a true fighter".

Trump also adds, as he's said previously, that Scalise is "having a hard time, far worse than anybody thought" following the shooting Wednesday.

Almost 25,000 tickets were sold for the game and it was on track to raise more than $1 million, roughly double what it did a year ago, organizers said.

The last time a lawmaker was shot was when Democratic Rep.
