Tens of thousands protest Hub 'Free Speech Rally'

In Boston, authorities have granted a permit for a "Free Speech" rally on Boston Common and a counter-rally expected to draw a larger crowd.

"I opposed Donald Trump during the campaign because I did not think that he had the temperament to be President, and since taking office much of his actions have reinforced that assessment", Baker said.

Whether anti-fascist groups like the one that confronted white nationalists in Charlottesville will attend, Camacho said, is unclear.

Boston-area Black Lives Matter co-organizer Angelina Camacho said she rejected the claims made by the "Free Speech Rally" organizers to distance themselves from the violence in Charlottesville.

The people who had put on a rally - a small rally back in May, free speech people - you know, they had held one.

A growing number of USA political leaders have called for the removal of statues honoring the Confederacy, with civil rights activists charging that they promote racism. He joined the crowd of thousands assembling in Boston's historically black Roxbury neighbourhood early on Saturday. But since a group of neo-Nazis, white supremacists and Ku Klux Klan members took to the streets in Charlottesville, Virginia - ostensibly to protest the planned removal of a Confederate statue - the expected attendance by protesters has grown substantially.

Barriers will separate participants from a planned counterprotest that its organizers are calling a "racial justice solidarity march".

For his part, Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh, citing counsel from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is urging citizens to just steer clear of the Common altogether.

"These signs and the message so far this morning is all about love and peace", Walsh told reporters. ANSWER Coalition which stands for "Act Now to Stop War & End Racism" also stated that they plan to address institutionalized and systematic racism, white supremacy and intolerance.

And they say, following the events of Charlottesville, they've disavowed violence.

A free speech rally in the city in May saw duelling protests, shouting and foul language, according to local media reports from the time. "We can not continue to ignore racism".

GELLERMAN: No. The Facebook page for this group, which calls itself Boston Free Speech, has - calls itself a coalition, a group that is comprised of "libertarians" - and I'm quoting here - "classical conservatives, liberals and Trump supporters".

"We can not continue to ignore racism, ignore white supremacism, ignore neo-Nazis and pretend it's not a problem", she said.

Evans also criticized the publicity surrounding the event, saying that because of "the frenzy over the last six days", the Boston rally has been portrayed "like a showdown".
