A timeline of events since Jayalalithaa's death — AIADMK merger

Sasikala not only removed Panneerselvam and made E Palaniswami the CM but also brought is her nephew TTV Dinakaran into the party again.

Let's have a look at the timeline of events that has happened in last few months.

The compromise would be her ouster by the party's general council.

December 29: Jayalalithaa's close aide V K Sasikala was elected unopposed as the AIADMK general secretary at a party meeting.

Within hours of the merger, Governor Ch Vidhyasagar Rao administered the oath to the two Ministers at a simple ceremony at Raj Bhavan, taking the strength of the Edappadi ministry to 35.

May 6: AIADMK (Amma) describes as "opportunism" Panneerselvam camp's demand for a CBI probe into Jayalalithaa's death as a pre-condition for merger talks. Shortly thereafter the party announced that steps would be taken for the removal of V.K. Sasikala from the post of general secretary of the party. "General council (of AIADMK) can only decide on the general secretary (appointment or expulsion)".

Sasikala's status in the party is not the only area of uncertainty the party will have to sort out. On March 22, Election Commission froze the party symbol recognizing the split in the party.

It was on February 7 that former Chief Minister O Panneerselvam dramatically announced his rebellion against the AIADMK General Secretary VK Sasikala. This could spell trouble for the government. He had stepped in before, twice, handpicked by Ms Jayalalithaa when she had to resign over corruption cases.

Palaniswami gradually emerged as leader of a faction of about 122 MLAs in the 234 member Assembly. Panneerselvam will be the convener and Palaniswami the co-convener of the AIADMK.

With the main factions together, party leaders said winning the case before the commission would be a lot easier. Party leaders from both the factions held multiple meetings after which the OPS-EPS united and Panneerselvam took oath as the Deputy CM on August 21, 2017.

Analysts pointed to the procedural and political challenges that lay ahead. "This is the question which is on everybody's mind right now", he said. A pact has been eluding the both factions since acceleration of talks over a week ago.

Hundreds of party cadres, who had thronged the AIADMK office on the occasion, gave a rousing welcome to Panneerselvam.

After much speculation and last-minute negotiations, the merger was announced at the AIADMK headquarters on Monday afternoon. Both Palaniswami and Panneerselvam come from powerful communities - the former a Gounder and the latter a Thevar.
