Trump Keeps Praising Response to Puerto Rico Crisis, Blasts "Politically Motivated Ingrates"

Mulvaney and Mnuchin's criticism follows a White House official's anonymous statement on Saturday suggesting that Cruz has been "too busy doing TV" to properly gauge federal relief efforts.

"The tweets this morning are despicable, are deplorable, are not statesman-like at all", said NY city council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, a Democrat who was born in Puerto Rico.

"Maybe from where she's standing it's a good news story".

"She has been working 24/7".

When NBC News executive Janelle Rodriguez sends someone new to Puerto Rico, she makes sure they bring extra suitcases packed with water and non-perishable food.

"I can not fathom the thought that the greatest nation in the world can not figure out logistics for a small island of 100 miles by 35 miles", she said.

On Saturday, she responded to Trump's tweeted comments, saying, "It's not about politics, it's not about petty comments, it's about moving forward, putting boots on the ground and saving lives".

But Puerto Rico's governor emphasized progress and co-operation on Saturday.

Puerto Rico Gov. Ricardo Rossello has called the destruction to the island unprecedented, though the Republican has praised the US government's relief efforts.

San Juan's mayor is slamming a Trump administration official for referring to Puerto Rico's suffering as "a good news story".

"When I read that tweet, it was in reference to the mayor of San Juan, not to the people of Puerto Rico", said Rossello, who has made a point of working cooperatively with Trump's administration on aid for the island. I'm just a little mayor from the capital of San Juan.

Rossello publicly struck a conciliatory tone in remarks earlier in the day, saying the federal government fulfilled all his requests, though there's still plenty of humanitarian work to be done. "If anyone can hear us; Mr. Trump can hear us, let's just get it over with and get the ball rolling".

Trump on Saturday seemed furious with Cruz's criticism, tweeting almost a dozen times on the matter, with the last several lauding Rosselló and Mapp's efforts.

"We have done a great job with the nearly impossible situation in Puerto Rico". "We are dying and you are killing us with your inefficiency".

San Juan resident Judith Berkan said power shortages and long lines for cash, food, gasoline and medical attention were wearing people down. "I mean, the mayor is reacting to a very chaotic situation in Puerto Rico".

As Elaine Duke landed in Puerto Rico, Friday, Trump described the island as completely devastated. Cruz says that "if he asks to meet with me, of course I would meet with him". Breban has started a Facebook group called "Atlanta Levanta a Puerto Rico", which aims to help organizations in their efforts to collect, organize and distribute donations for the island.

Puerto Rico, which earlier this year filed the biggest bankruptcy in USA municipal history, is struggling to regain economic stability in the face of a $72 billion debt load and near-insolvent public health and pension systems.

She worked as an adviser to the San Juan mayor and the president of Puerto Rico's House of representatives, according to her biography.

The insurance industry has begun to tally the mounting costs of Maria, with one modelling company estimating that claims could total as much as US$85 billion (RM359 billion). She also drove past still-flooded streets, twisted billboards and roofs with gaping holes, and offered encouragement to some of the emergency personnel the US government has on the ground. He said more were expected to be dispatched in the afternoon.
