Met Eireann Issues Weather Warnings Ahead Of Storm Brian

Just days after Hurricane Ophelia killed three people in Ireland, Britain is set to experience another "dangerous" storm which will bring winds of up to 80mph and cause floods, traffic chaos and power outages, forecasters fear.

The storm system is forecast to smash into the United Kingdom with winds of around 70mph by Saturday morning, according to weather models.

Met √Čireann has also called the weather system "Storm Brian" for the first time having earlier been reluctant to do so.

These updates follow on from a status yellow rainfall warning which remains in place today (October 19).

The UK Met Office has issued a Yellow alert for the same a spell of strong southwesterly winds on Saturday.

"Those wind speeds can cause impacts to transport and power supplies, and the potential for risky waves also brings risks to coastal routes and communities, as well as the potential for flooding of homes".

In order for it to be categorised as a weather bomb the central pressure of the low pressure system must fall 24 millibars inside a 24 hour period.

Some transport disruption is likely across the warning area, with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport.

In the wake of Storm Ophelia, another weather warning has been issued and it applies to the following counties.

Latest models show the tempest hitting the southwest coast at around 9am on Saturday before ripping through the country during the day.

Classified by Met √Čireann as a storm earlier on Thursday (19 October), its affects are predicted to be felt all across the United Kingdom with strong winds forecast for Wales, north-west England and most of southern England on the first day of many pupils' half-term holidays.

Storms in the United Kingdom and Ireland are named alphabetically and Brian will follow September's Storm Aileen - Hurricane Ophelia was named by the National Hurricane Centre in the USA, so does not follow the same pattern.
