House Lawmakers Probing Obama-Era Uranium Deal

The probes, involving the House Judiciary, Oversight and Intelligence Committees, came as Republicans and President Donald Trump weather increasing pressure from the multiple investigations into how Russian Federation may have aided Trump's presidential campaign past year.

One is demanding more clarity on how the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Justice decided during the height of last year's White House race to not pursue charges against Clinton over her alleged misuse of a personal email server.

Clinton was not mentioned during the press conference as part of the Russian Federation investigation.

"This new investigation is a massive diversion to distract from the lack of Republican oversight of the Trump administration and the national security threat that Russian Federation poses", Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, and Rep. John Conyers, D-Maryland, the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, said in a statement.

Russian Federation gradually acquired control of a Canadian mining company-Uranium One-with mining stakes in the United States from 2009 to 2013, a series of agreements that gave it control of 20 percent of America's uranium production capacity. Republicans say they want to know if the State Department under Clinton approved the deal because of donations made to the Clinton Foundation.

Devin Nunes' announcement came one week after The Hill published a report on a "racketeering scheme. created to benefit former President Bill Clinton's charitable foundation during the time Secretary of State Hillary Clinton served on a government body that provided a favorable decision to Moscow".

Mr. Trump has also long charged that former FBI Director James Comey used his agency to protect Hillary Clinton during the 2016 campaign. "This is more about uranium and whether or not government functioned properly or not", Nunes said.

President Donald Trump repeatedly blasted the deal on the campaign trail, saying that Clinton "was paid a fortune" for setting up the sale.

David Bossie said Attorney General Jeff Sessions must appoint a special counsel to investigate the Uranium One deal, because that's the only way to get to the bottom of it.

Nunes, who stepped aside from his panel's Russian Federation probe amid controversy in April, said the uranium inquiry was a separate matter. "That amounts to ten months of abdication of responsibility-a near total failure to question, investigate, or challenge the President or the White House, including on grave allegations of obstruction of justice".
