TPP countries agree to keep trade deal alive, much work remains

The 11 remaining members of the Trans-Pacific Partnership after the US withdrawal from the trade pact early this year decided on Friday to postpone the summit meeting to reach an official agreement.

The Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) may not be dead in the water just yet, with Canada's trade minister denying that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau deliberately skipped a leaders' meeting in Vietnam.

Speaking separately, a Canadian official said the nations had "agreed to a framework towards the deal" with work programs to handle various outstanding issues.

Champagne, who blamed "a misunderstanding about the schedule" for Trudeau's absence, specifically mentioned the auto sector and cultural protection as areas needing more work.

The Mexican minister did not give details as to exactly what had been agreed, but answered "yes" when asked by reporters if ministers had reached agreement.

It did not say when that might happen.

But while Japan has been lobbying hard for a quick agreement to move ahead, Canada, New Zealand and Malaysia are among countries that have appeared less enthusiastic to hurry.

Motegi said negotiators had tried to reach a conclusion satisfactory to all, "or put in a different way, a conclusion that makes everybody equally unhappy". She was also set to meet him at an Apec dinner late on Friday, and on Saturday in Vietnam.

Canada, which has the second biggest economy among remaining TPP countries after Japan, had said it wanted to ensure an agreement that would protect jobs.
