Fuel running out for Yemen hospitals, United Nations warns

A Saudi-led coalition intervened in 2015 and has conducted a relentless airstrike campaign in the country to support the predominantly Sunni government and suppress the Houthis, who are backed by Iran.

Hedile noted the first flight carrying 218 passengers took off today.

"While the Saudi-led military coalition has partially lifted the recent blockade of Yemen, closure of much of the country's air, sea and land ports is making an already catastrophic situation far worse", they said.

"The Secretary-General is very much disappointed we've not seen a lifting of the blockade".

Dujarric says the United Nations urges the coalition to resume U.N. humanitarian flights to Aden and the capital, Sanaa, and to reopen the ports of Hodeida and Salif for food and medical deliveries.

The United Nations has listed Yemen as the world's number one humanitarian crisis, with 17 million people in need of food, seven million of whom are at risk of starvation. "We'll see what the next step will be on that".

Yemen already has 7 million people on the brink of starvation, but without the reopening of all ports that number could grow by 3.2 million, the heads of the World Food Programme, UNICEF and the World Health Organization said in a joint statement. The move came after Saudi Arabia intercepted a missile fired toward Riyadh, which it blamed on Tehran.

Diplomats criticised the proposed statement as lacking balance and said they did not expect it to be endorsed by the council. Saudi officials have previously suggested the Shi'ites surrender the port to them, though since aid shipped to other pro-Saudi ports never reaches the nation's Shi'ite population, that appears to be no solution at all.

Save the Children reported that Yemen will see an average of 130 children a day - or one child every 10 minutes - die this year due to obstructions to humanitarian aid and what is now regarded as the largest cholera outbreak seen in modern history.

Stocks of diesel and petrol are running out in parts of Yemen because of the blockade, while the prices of basic goods have skyrocketed.

The U.N. children's agency UNICEF had only three weeks of vaccine supplies left in Yemen, and both UNICEF and the World Health Organization had shipments of essential medicines and vaccines blocked in Djibouti, McGoldrick said.
