Jesus's hometown cancels Christmas over … Trump?

The Muslim mayor of the Israeli city of Nazareth, which has a large Arab population, has chose to cancel some Christmas events, blaming U.S. President Donald Trump for souring the holiday following his controversial decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

City spokesman Salem Sharara said: "We have chose to cancel the traditional Christmas singing and dancing because we are in a time of dispute, because of what Trump has said about Jerusalem".

It also marked a reversal from Thursday's announcement by Nazareth's city council that Salam had ordered the axing of all planned artistic events, including a festival and large Christmas market.

Reuters pointed out that the Palestinian town of Bethlehem, where Jesus was born, also briefly switched off its Christmas lights last week in protest.

At a little over 30 per cent of the population, Christians are a significant minority - but are dominated by the Muslim majority which voted Salam into power.

The move is in protest to President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The Palestinian leadership, Fatah and Hamas, claims the Jewish people have falsified their 3,000 year-old history to lay claim to Jerusalem.

Obama, a Democrat, told the American Israel Public Affairs Committee in 2008 that Jerusalem "will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided". Palestinians maintain that Jerusalem will be the capital of their future state.

"We ask churches, the Pope and our Christian brothers to devote their Sunday prayers to Jerusalem".

Salam, who is Muslim, said people of all faiths were welcome to visit the city.

Bush, a Republican, promised during the 2000 campaign that "as soon as I take office I will begin the process of moving the US ambassador to the city Israel has chosen as its capital".

And this is not their first such act in response to the Trump announcement.

He told the BBC: "He is declaring war in the Middle East, he is declaring war against 1.5 billion Muslims (and) hundreds of millions of Christians that are not going to accept the holy shrines to be totally under the hegemony of Israel".
