Russia's Vladimir Putin thanks Donald Trump for helping foil terror attack

"President Trump appreciated the call and told President Putin that he and the entire United States intelligence community were pleased to have helped save so many lives", the White House said in a statement late on Sunday.

The group was preparing explosions targeting the cathedral and other public places in Russia's second city, the Kremlin statement said on Sunday.

The Kremlin said Putin phoned the United States president to thank him and to convey his gratitude to the CIA, adding that Russian security agencies would continue to provide any information they obtained about potential terror threats against the United States, as it has done in the past.

The Russian leader reassured the USA president that "Russian security services, should they have information about possible terrorist threats to the United States and its citizens, will swiftly and unconditionally share it with the U.S. colleagues via partner channels", the press service stressed.

It stressed that the cooperation "serves as an example of the positive things that can occur when our countries work together".


On Friday, Russia's FSB security service said it had arrested seven members of an Islamist terror group planning "the killing of citizens" in a series of suicide attacks in Russia's second city on December 16.

On Tuesday, FSB chief Alexander Bortnikov said Russian Federation was on alert for the possible return of jihadists from Syria ahead of the World Cup and the presidential election in 2018. "We would like to have Russia's help", he told reporters outside the White House.
