Trudeau needs to repay taxpayers for Aga Khan trip: Tory MP

"I'm sorry I didn't, and in the future, I will be clearing all my family vacations with the commissioner's office".

While the finding could tarnish Trudeau's popularity half-way into his mandate, he does not face any penalties.

OTTAWA-Justin Trudeau, who came into office vowing to be the gold standard in transparency and ethical behaviour, became the first prime minister to violate federal conflict of interest rules over a series of family vacations past year.

"During the planning for the December, 2016 trip, the Trudeaus were informed that the Aga Khan and his family may or may not be present", the report said. "When Mr. Trudeau, as Prime Minister, accepted the gifts of hospitality from the Aga Khan and the use of his private island in March and December 2016, there were ongoing official dealings with the Aga Khan, and the Aga Khan Foundation Canada was registered to lobby his office". Finance Minister Bill Morneau recently announced he sold shares in the pension company he used to run amid criticism for how he handled his personal finances after getting elected.

NDP ethics critic Nathan Cullen called Dawson's report "disturbing" and said it "speaks to the culture of entitlement" around the prime minister.

A year after becoming Liberal leader, the Aga Khan sent a standing invitation for Trudeau and his family to visit Bells Cay, suggesting it would provide Trudeau with some private family vacation time.

"I take full responsibility for this", Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa, later calling the travel to the island in the Bahamas a mistake. Moreover, he said it undermines Trudeau's entire defence of the trip.

Mr. Trudeau long maintained he broke no rules because public-office holders are allowed to accept gifts from friends.

Going forward, Trudeau vowed to clear all family vacations with the ethics watchdog in advance in order to avoid conflicts. Dawson began her investigation after receiving a letter this year from Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer, who said the vacations constituted a gift.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says next summer - and not July 1st - is the date cannabis will become legal across the country. "I found that Mr. Trudeau did not contravene this provision because he has not discussed any House of Commons business with the Aga Khan or his representatives, and there was no evidence that Mr. Trudeau participated in any debate or vote in the House of Commons related to the Aga Khan or his institutions".
