US Diplomat Apologizes After Being Caught Out for 'Fake News' Remark

The US Ambassador for the Netherlands was left embarrassed this week when he called a statement he previously made "fake news".

But if you haven't, you might be wondering who Pete Hoekstra, the ambassador to the Netherlands, is - and why he apologized Saturday after literally crying "fake news!" in an on-air interview. "Chaos in the Netherlands, there are cars being burnt, there are politicians that are being burnt ... and yes there are no-go zones in the Netherlands". He also said that Europe is in chaos.

After a further exchange with reporter Wouter Zwart, Hoekstra then denied using the term "fake news" only moments before in dismissing the initial allegations.

The new U.S. Ambassador to the Netherlands is facing criticism after a Dutch journalist asked him about comments the ambassador made about "no-go" areas in the Netherlands, where he claimed radical Muslims were setting cars and politicians on fire.

"I didn't call that fake news", Hoekstra said.

Have a look at the video below as Hoekstra is caught out in his lie.it makes for great viewing. "I didn't use the words today. No, I don't think I did", the ambassador replied, despite just having just called it "fake news".

The comments came to light during a cringeworthy exchange on the current affairs programme Nieuwsuur on Friday where Hoekstra directly contradicted himself twice in a matter of less than a minute on live television. The interview is not playing well in the Netherlands.

Hoekstra was born in the Netherlands and his family emigrated to MI when he was a toddler, The Washington Post reported. Hoekstra, 64, is a Dutch-American Republican congressman, who represents Michigan's 2nd congressional district. He is opposed to same-sex marriage, gay rights, women's rights to abortion, he supports the death penalty and has argued that refugees pose a threat to European security.

Of the appointment, liberal politician Sophie in't Veld said: "We are looking forward with interest to co-operating with Mr Hoekstra".

Zwart told CNN he did not play video of the 2015 remarks for Hoekstra, saying he "can't imagine he did not know of its existence", because it was widely available online.

The new United States ambassador to the Netherlands has blatantly lied about his own anti-Islamic rhetoric, and then lied about lying.
