Bus kills at least 4 people in Moscow, driver detained

A bus in Russia's capital careened off a road on Monday and slammed into an underground passageway, killing at least four people and injuring 13 others when it crushed pedestrians in its path, Russian authorities said.

Muscovites are bringing bouquets of flowers to the underground walkway near Slavyansky Boulevard metro station where a hair-raising road accident involving a commuter bus occurred on Monday afternoon.

Police believe the crash wasn't an intentional attack, but caused by a possible mechanical issue or the driver losing control of the vehicle. Police said that the incident happened as the bus driver lost control of the bus.

There were also unconfirmed reports that some 15 people had been injured. Police were questioning the driver.

The Interfax news agency said that the investigators had confirmed that the incident had occurred as a result of a technical fault with the bus.

According to the source, there are two main reasons for the crash: either the bus or another auto cut it off or the brakes on the bus failed.

A number of people taken to hospital are said to be in a life-threatening condition.

Monday morning was an ordinary working day in Russian Federation where Orthodox Christmas will be celebrated on January 7.
