Former Ballon d'Or victor George Weah to become president of Liberia

Weah will succeed Africa's first female President, economist and Nobel Peace Prize victor Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.

Weah supporters paraded through the streets of the capital Monrovia and honked auto horns to celebrate the news.

Her NPP party agreed to form a coalition with Weah's Congress for Democratic Change in 2017, on the condition Howard-Taylor could run as vice-president.

With 98.1 per cent of ballots counted, Weah had secured 61.5 per cent of the vote, according to statistics from the National Elections Commission.

Supporter Love Norrision said: "I am so glad and happy that we now have our president who will bring a change". Election officials put turnout at 56%.

The four Liberian presidents before the incumbent Ellen Johnson Sirleaf either died in office or were forced into exile.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has sent former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo to Liberia to help in that country's peaceful transition of power.

Born in Liberia, it was Arsene Wenger who brought him over to Europe, when he was manager of Monaco in 1988.

Weah went on to play for top clubs such as Milan, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain, winning league titles in France and Italy and the FA Cup in England.

Mr Weah, 51, won the first round of the presidential election in October with 38.4% of the vote, compared with the 28.8% won by second-placed Mr Boakai, 73.

Liberia is Africa's oldest modern republic and was founded by freed U.S. slaves in 1847.

The revered footballer was one of the best strikers in world football becoming the only African footballer to have won Fifa World Player of the Year and the coveted Ballon D'Or, in 1995.
