Man killed in explosion at Stockholm station

The subway station of Varby Gard in the municipality of Huddinge, 11 kilometers south of Stockholm, Sweden, was closed after an explosion killed one man and wounded a woman on Sunday, on January 7, 2018.

A man in Stockholm picked up a suspected hand grenade from the ground and it detonated in his hand Sunday, killing him and injuring his companion, Swedish police said.

Police declined to confirm reports that the object was believed to be a hand grenade.

A man in his 60s died in hospital after "he picked up an object off the ground which promptly exploded", police spokesman Sven-Erik Olsson told AFP. The man reportedly was in serious condition.

Police also said the woman in her 40s, also taken to the hospital, had wounds on her face and both legs.

Police cordoned off the station and the square where the blast happened as the bomb squad moved in to investigate.

The background to the incident is not yet clear: "Someone has used explosives".

Alvarsjo said Swedish police have "unfortunately" noticed a rise in the use of hand grenades by criminal groups in the Nordic country.
