I'll Sign Any Immigration Bill Congress Sends Me

The goal of the White House meeting was to discuss how to reach an agreement between Democrats and Republicans, while still accomplishing the President's push for a wall along the United States border with Mexico and other changes to the United States immigration system - something Democrats widely oppose.

Trump and his fellow Republicans, who control the U.S. Congress, have been unable to reach agreement with Democrats on a deal to resolve the status of an estimated 700,000 young immigrants whose protection from potential deportation under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program ends in early March.

Trump announced in September his plans to terminate the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but he gave lawmakers a six-month window to pass a legislative deal before the temporary work permits begin to expire at a rate of almost 1,000 per day.

While the President has floated renewing the programme in exchange if Democrats agree to fortified border security, potentially including advancing the border wall, liberal lawmakers have resisted those types of conditions. Trump expressed a willingness to be flexible in finding an agreement as Democrats warned that the lives of hundreds of thousands of immigrants hung in the balance. "It should be a bill of love", Trump said.

Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC urged President Trump Tuesday to back his efforts to pass comprehensive immigration reform. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota and Jon Tester of Montana, as well as Democratic Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas, who frequently votes with Republicans on immigration and border issues - a sign that the White House is looking to pick off as many Democrats as it can even if it can't work with the party's key negotiators. "Because I respect them".

Representatives and senators attending the meeting with the White House are faced with tough negotiations.

"If you want to take it that further step, I'll take the heat", Trump responded.

Republicans were adamant that Trump's call "means the wall", but that Trump acknowledges that it does not need to cover the entire length of the border, because of geographic barriers.

"We don't oppose building a wall, but that's certainly not our first priority", said Eric Ruark, director of research at NumbersUSA.

His concern is about efforts by Trump and some congressional lawmakers to include issues not related to immigrants brought into this country by their parents as children who were covered under the program Trump scuttled in September. "If they come to me with things I'm not in love with, I'm going to do it. And we are going to build the wall", the president said Monday at an event in Knoxville, Tennessee.

He also called for an end to "chain migration" and to the green card lottery system.

Trump repeatedly supported the idea of the wall, but he began the meeting saying that he would back whatever bill Congress sends him. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., one of the attendees.
