No charges for teacher who was removed from Vermilion school board meeting

A video shows the stark moments when a teacher was handcuffed after protesting a pay raise for a superintendent in a Louisiana school district.

Hargrave spoke to the Vermilion Parish school board during the public comments portion of a meeting on Monday to discuss teacher pay and raises, according to KATC in Louisiana.

"I have a serious issue with a superintendent or any person in a position of leadership getting any type of raise, I feel like it's a slap in the face for the teachers, the cafeteria workers or any other support staff we have", Hargrave is seen saying in the video posted to YouTube.

She was called on twice during the public comments section of the meeting and was told it was not a time for Ms Hargrave's several questions regarding teachers' salaries. Hargrave yelled as the officer picked her up from the floor and pushed her towards an exit, commanding her to "stop resisting".

The school board does not plan to press charges against the teacher, according to KATC. "We work very hard with very little to maintain the salaries that we have".

Hargrave was booked into the Abbeville City Jail on Monday evening for the charges of resisting an officer and remaining on premises after being forbidden there, arrest records show.

After the board approved the raise, Hargrave was again recognized by the board and voiced her frustrations. During the confrontation, the teacher falls to the ground while an onlooker repeats, "What are you doing?"

The 74 was unable to reach the marshal's office or the school district Tuesday morning.

While she was being recognized by the superintendent, an Abbeville city marshal approached her and asked her to leave. Ms Hargrave did not appear to be raising her voice during the meeting.

Hargrave added that the raise was unwarranted, saying teachers and students have met their performance targets while class sizes have grown.

While the board members did recognize it was the teacher's turn to speak, it's unclear if they called the marshal into the room to cut her off or if the officer acted on his own.
