Carabao Cup Recap: Chelsea, Arsenal settle for scoreless draw in 1st leg

Wilshere, who was originally reduced to only Europa League appearances after returning to action this season, had managed to force his way breaking into Arsene Wenger's Premier League side in October and has featured in Arsenal's last seven league outings.

Blues boss, Antonio Conte, named a very strong team for the game, but they were unable to see off a patched-up Arsenal squad.

Wenger selected Mathieu Debuchy, Per Mertesacker and Rob Holding for Sunday's FA Cup third round clash against Nottingham Forest with Calum Chambers, the manager's only other defensive option rested, but that starting back-three endured a woeful afternoon at the City Ground with Debuchy and Holding both giving away penalties in a 4-2 defeat.

Chelsea are now in third place in the Premier League table as they look to try and get closer to leaders Manchester City.

Arsene Wenger will continue to serve his touchline ban and is expected to revert to a full strength side for tonight's 1st leg.

One concern for Arsenal was Jack Wilshere's substitution in the second-half as the midfielder limped off with an ankle injury.

Arsenal were forced into a change in the 57th minute as Wilshere, who was getting back in form after a long lay-off, went off with a knock and was replaced by Mohamed Elneny.

Victor Moses found joy in attacking inexperienced wing-back Ainsley Maitland-Niles down the Arsenal left, with David Ospina grasping a shot at the second attempt as Morata lurked.

Andreas Christensen fared no better after the interval when the Chelsea defender dived to head over from inside the six-yard box.

When Christensen headed wide of an open goal after Ospina misjudged a corner, Conte must have feared it wouldn't be Chelsea's night.
